The hot weather has arrived in full force and by now, you’ve got a good idea of how well your air conditioner is performing. How would you rate its service? Does everything seem fine and dandy, or do you have some concerns about its performance?

Although calling for air conditioning repair is never fun, it helps to have an inkling of what could be wrong. When your AC needs help, it’ll let you know in obvious ways. Let’s go over the 5 common AC repair needs and what’s usually behind them. That way, you can have an idea of what to expect on your service call.

1. Strange Noises and Smells

Unusual smells and noises are a clear indicator that something is amiss. Especially if those noises are particularly grating and the smells are extra stinky. Here are some signs that warrant calling us for repairs:

  • The smell of chloroform could be from leaking refrigerant.
  • Noises such as bubbling or hissing can indicate low refrigerant levels
  • Grinding, screeching, or the sound of metal on metal can mean a lack of lubrication or a loose part
  • Banging and clanging could mean there’s a loose part that’s knocking around

2. The Air Coming From the Vents Isn’t Cold

If you’ve noticed the airflow isn’t as cold as it used to be, this impacts your comfort levels–and your utility bills. You may run your AC longer in an attempt to get your home to your ideal temperature but it never reaches it. Lukewarm air could mean that there’s a refrigerant leak or a problem with the thermostat.

3. No Air Is Coming From the Vents

This is an issue you’ll detect right away. Your AC is on but there’s no air flowing from the vents and the temperature inside hasn’t budged. This issue is likely caused by the blower fan. This is the component of your AC system that’s responsible for sending cooled air through the vents and into the rooms of your home. Give us a call and we’ll check the blower fan and see if it needs to be replaced.

4. The System Is Short Cycling

Short cycling is a major problem for 2 reasons: it causes immense wear and tear on your system and your AC can’t cool your home down. Short cycling is apparent by the sound of your AC turning on, running for a short while, then shutting off again. It keeps doing this in a vicious cycle. The problem could be one of many things: a dirty or clogged air filter, low refrigerant levels, or frozen evaporator coils. Give us a call ASAP so we can address this issue.

5. Ice on the Condenser

If you notice ice growing on any part of your air conditioner, this is a pretty serious problem that warrants a call for repairs. The first thing you should do is clean or replace the air filter. If that doesn’t fix the problem, there could be a refrigerant leak.
