Is Your Plumbing System Ready for the Holidays?

The holiday season is upon us! For many people, it’s the most wonderful time of the year as they prepare their homes with holiday decorations and look forward to hosting friends and out-of-town guests for extended visits.

That’s why it’s essential to make sure your home’s plumbing system is ready for the increase in guests and activities. Let’s go over 4 tips on how to make sure you won’t need to schedule a plumber in Orlando, FL this holiday season.

A Reminder on What Should and Shouldn’t Go Down the Drain

Now’s the ideal time to go over what should and shouldn’t go down the drain with household members and guests. A broken garbage disposal or a low-flowing toilet are the unfortunate results of a well-meaning family member accidentally putting something where it shouldn’t go.

In the kitchen, provide a gentle reminder to guests in the form of a post-it note by the kitchen sink. Let guests know that these things should never go down the kitchen sink: coffee grounds, eggshells, bones, seafood shells, fats, and starchy food items such as pasta, potato peels, and rice.

In the bathroom, let guests know in the nicest way possible that there are only 2 things that should go down the toilet: waste and toilet paper. Items that can cause problems with your home’s toilets include “flushable” wipes, makeup removal wipes, paper towels, dental floss, cotton balls, Q-tips, and feminine products. Make sure your bathroom has an obviously placed garbage bin so guests have a place to discard these things.

Get Existing Problems Fixed Now

Do you have a leaking faucet? How about a slow-draining shower? Perhaps one of your drains is on the stinky side? If you know about minor problems that have the potential to become major issues when the holidays make demands on your plumbing system, get them fixed now.

Plan Out Household Water Usage

Your home’s water heater probably handles the demands for hot water throughout the year. But extra demands such as an increase in the number of household members, extra showers, and running the dishwasher often can take a toll on your home’s hot water supply.

If you’re expecting lots of visitors, it’s a good idea to have a plan of attack for hot water usage. Work out a schedule for showers so that you don’t end up with several people needing to shower at the same time every morning. Also, run the dishwasher and washing machine in the evening to avoid leaving your guests without sufficient hot water for their showers.

Schedule Pre-Emptive Drain Cleaning

If you think your pipes and drains may already have some problems with potential clogs, or if you’d just like to stay on top of preventative maintenance, consider scheduling pre-emptive drain cleaning with our team. Drain cleaning will help make sure that there are no plumbing surprises this holiday season. It’s also a gift that’ll keep on giving long after the holidays are over.
